embellish (v.) mid-14c., "to render beautiful," from Old French embelliss-, stem of embellir "make beautiful, ornament," from assimilated form of en- (see en- (1))bel "beautiful," from Latin bellus "handsome, pretty, fine" (see belle). Embellishment Through Embroidery

Embellishment through the medium of Embroidery, is a deep well that engages and inspires. Using photographic imagery as my primary source I will enhance a feature or thread an idea through the photograph to create an alternative dialogue, whether that be to enhance a feature, or thread a feeling of whimsy through the photograph. I study each picture, looking for what the subject might be thinking, I always look for the stories within the stories. This is a part of who I am, it enables me to find richness in often perceived mundane areas of life. I look for the magic, the surreal the deep humanity and convey it wherever I can... that is the challenge and the gift.

I embroider to expand feeling, form or pattern, with colour, texture and stitch, to tell a parallel story of the image. I am always experimenting with the effects of threads. Using techniques and materials to embroider bold geometric patterns, hopefully taking the eye and mind a little sideways. I love to create emotion or feeling, or simply humour by re-imagining the image through my own lens creating additional layers to the original photograph.
I have been working with paper and threads for over ten years now. I see my artwork as storytelling. Behind every found photograph I work on, I see a new story that can be told. I hope you find a piece that talks to you.

Artist Statement

Pressed Flowers

Plants have always governed my life, I came from a family of gardeners and I spent my early life with one grandmother who was a true plant whisperer and another who devoted her time to her garden but especially to cultivating convallaria majalis or Lily of the Valley. I am delighted to still have and use my first flower press which came from my grandmother.

Throughout history pressed flowers have been an artform, a means of connection to home, a way of preserving memories of people and places and of course a means of making sense of our environment.

When creating I move between all things that manifest in nature from wildness and chaos to pattern and order.

I present nature through pressed botanicals to draw on the strength fragility and at times fleeting beauty of nature. Creating my own herbarium of pressed materials allows me to explore botanicals in a new dimension, and bring the garden into homes. The metamorphous of the medium brings forth changes that are almost inperceptable, I draw on the texture and form, to add depth to each image. It is an art-form of transcendence and delicate observation.

Embroidery

The history of embroidery has a rich and beautiful narrative and one that I am forever learning more about. I embroider to explore, to feel, to tell a parallel story, through the image. I use colour, geometric pattern, otherworldly imagery like wings and crowns. I am always experimenting with effects, embroidering geometric patterns  that create another dialogue, taking the eye and mind a little sideways.  Re-imagining the image through my own lens I create an additional layer to the original photograph. I use embroidery to entice emotion, feeling, or simply humour.
